What is a Unit?

One unit of electricity is the amount of energy consumed by a 1000 watt appliance for 1 hour.

1 Unit = 1 kWh

1. Power Consumption of Common Electrical Appliances (Watt)

Appliance Power
LED Bulb 9W
Ceiling Fan 75W
Tube Light 40W
LED TV 100W
Refrigerator 150W
Washing Machine 500W
Mixer Grinder 500W
Water Pump 750W
Iron 1000W
Microwave Oven 1200W
Geyser 2000W
AC (1.5 Ton) 1500W

2. How to Calculate Electricity Units?

Formula

Electricity Units (kWh) = Power (Watt) × Time (hours) ÷ 1000

Important

1 Unit (kWh) = 1 Kilowatt-hour = 1000 Watt-hours

Example

If a 75W fan runs for 10 hours:

Units used = (75 × 10) ÷ 1000

= 0.75 Unit (kWh)

Therefore

1 Unit costs ₹7.00

So, the cost for 0.75 unit = 0.75 × 7 = ₹5.25

3. Electricity Bill Calculation (Example)

Appliance Power (W) No. of Units per Day Daily Energy (kWh) Per Unit Rate (30 days) Electricity Bill (₹)
LED Bulb 9 5 0.045 1.35 ₹9.45
Ceiling Fan (75W) 75 10 0.75 22.5 ₹157.50
Refrigerator (100W) 100 4 0.40 12 ₹84.00
Geyser (150W) 150 24 3.60 108 ₹756.00
Total 143.85 ₹1006.95

4. Tips to Reduce Electricity Bills

  • Use LED bulbs, which consume less power.
  • Turn off lights and fans when not in use.
  • Use 5 Star rated appliances.
  • Set AC temperature to 24°C (75°F).
  • Choose energy-efficient appliances.
  • Use natural light during the day.

SAVE ENERGY, SAVE MONEY

  • Reduce your electricity usage.
  • Adopt energy-efficient habits for a better future.
